BUILDING THE “NETWORK” BEYOND VOLLEYBALL: LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP AND TALENT MANAGEMENT FROM BERNARDINHO

Abstract

The present study aims to analyze the updates and new elements incorporated by Bernardinho in the people management model presented in the book "Transforming Sweat into Gold" after his departure from the leadership of the Brazilian men's volleyball team in 2017. The research corpus consisted of eight lectures given by Bernardinho from 2020 to 2022. The lectures were transcribed in full for analysis. The content analysis technique was employed for data organization and analysis. It was observed that Bernardinho introduced new themes in his lectures, such as organizational culture, training methodology, and hard skills and soft skills. The central themes of "Transforming Sweat into Gold," such as teamwork, focus, leadership, extreme training, discipline, success, and its pitfalls, were reinforced and refined. The Wheel of Excellence and the new Scale of Values were not mentioned in the lectures, and no new systematization was presented. It is concluded that Bernardinho's main (updated) teachings for leaders to build a winning team are: choose the right people to work with, prioritize the team, focus on what matters, impose extreme work, demand discipline, and reinvent oneself.
