A ECONOMIA POLÍTICA DA ESPERANÇA: ALIENAÇÃO, EXPLORAÇÃO E MERCANTILIZAÇÃO NAS APOSTAS ONLINE NO BRASIL

The expansion of online betting in Brazil constitutes one of the most significant expressions of the contemporary transformations of digital capitalism. Although public debate has focused predominantly on regulatory, fiscal, and legal issues, the analysis of the mechanisms through which expectations of social mobility are incorporated into capitalist accumulation processes remains relatively neglected. This article examines the Brazilian online betting market through the lens of Marxist political economy, drawing upon the concepts of alienation, surplus value, commodity fetishism, and the commodification of subjectivity. Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative documentary approach based on data collected from the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting of the Ministry of Finance, the Brazilian Financial and Capital Markets Association (ANBIMA), and relevant national and international scholarly literature. It is argued that betting platforms operate by transforming hope into a commodity, converting expectations of economic advancement into assets integrated into circuits of capital valorization. The findings indicate that the expansion of online betting cannot be understood merely as a phenomenon of consumption or entertainment, but rather as a manifestation of contemporary forms of economic exploitation and the capture of subjectivity characteristic of platform capitalism.
