Objective: To determine the adverse effects of temporomandibular disorders on the daily activities of institutionalized elderly in a municipality of the Pernambuco Sertão and how these factors can influence their quality of life. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional, observational study. Data were collected using a simplified questionnaire for screening patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) (QST/DTM). This instrument, validated against the gold-standard Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC-TMD) responsible for TMD diagnosis, consists of 7 multiple-choice questions. Results: Nine elderly individuals were included in this study. Only 33.4% reported that their jaw locks when they open or close their mouth and that they feel pain in the cheek area; 22.3% said their jaws get tired throughout the day; 88.8% reported never having had pain or difficulty opening their mouth. Conclusion: Temporomandibular disorders negatively affect the quality of life of institutionalized elderly.
