Abstract

Introduction: Motorcycle crashes have a significant impact on the health system and society, highlighting the need to improve mortality and morbidity information systems. Helmet use significantly reduces the incidence of head trauma and the need for hospital admission. The aim of this study is to stimulate and deepen the discussion on helmet use by motorcyclists and its impact on the incidence and prevalence of facial trauma in Brazil. Methodology: To study helmet use and sales in Brazil, we used e-commerce platforms (Mercado Livre, Amazon Brasil, Magazine Luiza, Americanas and GridMo-tors) and trend analysis using Google Trends. Results: A clear preference and greater availability of closed-face helmets with visors was observed on the e-commerce platforms studied. There was also a variety of helmets sold, including open and retractable helmets, but to a lesser extent. Google Trends indicated that closed visor helmets were the most popular. Conclusion: Closed helmets with a visor are the safest and most sold in Brazil, highlighting the need for public policies to promote their use. Open helmets, although less sold, still pose a significant risk of facial trauma.
