Abstract

Introduction: temporomandibular disorder TMD is a functional abnormality of the temporomandibular joint that involves ligaments, bones and articular disc, affecting between 40 and 75% of the world's population. Rapid prototyping constitutes a tool to aid the process of diagnosing TMD without reducing it and assisting correction surgeries. Objective: to develop 3D models, based on magnetic resonance imaging, of the main stages of temporomandibular disorder and their relationship in the process of diagnosis and surgical treatment of TMD without joint recapture. Methodology: this is an exploratory study comparing DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) magnetic resonance imaging using medical image reconstruction software such as InVesalius 3.1, Meshmixer®Autodesk Inc.©3.59, Simplifly3D® 5.0 (slicing software ) and 3D printing of the ATM. Results: the 3D model samples revealed a pattern similar to the anatomy of the temporomandibular joint and the stage of TMD without recapture, in addition to the bony anatomical features of the complex joint system such as the articular tubercle of the temporal bone and head of the condylar process. Conclusion: 3D models contribute to a better understanding of TMD, assist the dentist in diagnosing TMD and participate in emergency treatment planning.
