Abstract

Objective: To describe a clinical case report of an extensive calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC), aiming to highlight the importance of prototyping as an essential tool for case planning and treatment. Case report: A 72-year-old male patient sought the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology service at Hospital da Restauração complaining of increased volume in the left mandibular region, causing facial asymmetry. The imaging examination obtained by helical tomography of the face showed an extensive hypodense image with hyperdense foci of irregular morphology inside. The biopsy of choice was incisional, which concluded COC for this case. The treatment performed consisted of enucleation of the lesion, curettage of the bone pocket and installation of a reconstruction plate made from a prototype obtained from the patient's mandible. Postoperative medications were prescribed to control pain, inflammation and infection; the sutures were removed 10 days after hospital discharge. Conclusion: Prototyping technology is a useful tool for developing therapeutic plans for patients with extensive jaw lesions, aiming for better trans- and post-operative outcomes.
