About reflections and republics: the translation of dialogue into drama

Abstract

This article analyzes some aspects of A procissão do Sayré, a play by José Paes Loureiro, from 1976, as opposed to the platonic dialogue A República. Starting from a discussion between being and seeming, the theatrical text will be scrutinized in view of some old debates established by Socrates and his interlocutors. While, on one hand, Socrates conducts the debate in the Platonic dialogue and, by listening and questioning his interlocutors, plans an ideal model of the city, on the other hand, Dionysus, faced with the Republic he directs, chooses not to listen to his advisers and become what he wanted to look like. In the background of the scene, the singing of Uirapuru dissolves appearances and tells what was happening. But no one hears his song and the Sayré procession arrives in the Republic, believing that the promised green land is there. With all these elements, the article presents a reading scene: the play, some Greek traditions that it mobilizes, and the status of simple and mixed narratives in Plato and how this reflects in a translation of literary genres.
