Amazonian Drama: An Analysis of L'autre côté du fleuve by Jacques Sabatier

The theater of French Guiana, despite being a rich source of expression and social criticism, remains largely unknown in the Lusophone context, due to the lack of translations and dissemination of these works. Set in the complex Amazonian landscape, this theater addresses issues deeply rooted in the region, such as the search for a Guianese identity, illegal exploitation of natural resources, immigration, violence, and the struggle for survival. The plays serve as a stage for resistance and social criticism, exposing the disparities and conflicts in the region. This study aims to analyze the play L'autre côté du fleuve (2019) by Jacques Sabatier, a work that embodies these themes. The Amazonian dramaturgy of French Guiana, although little known, has immense potential to shed light on social issues that provide a unique insight into life in this region.
