Impact of facial trauma on the brazilian public health system

Abstract

Facial trauma is considered a public health problem in Brazil, resulting in unnecessary medical care and expenses that could largely be avoided. The causes of facial trauma include falls from standing height, sports accidents, animal bites, pathological fractures, and, most commonly, traffic accidents and physical assaults. We believe that traffic education and social education would help prevent unnecessary accidents, given the prevalence of these causes. Stricter laws, education on the subject in schools, and mandatory vehicle insurance might be a way to relieve the public treasury of a preventable health problem.
