Sinais internacionais: da utopia ao cosmopolitismo surdo

International signs has been described as a conventional sign language for establishing international relations among members of deaf communities around the world. This article aims to discuss international signs as a part of a device that offers conditions for the formation of a cosmopolitan subjectivity associated with a way of experiencing being a deaf person. To this end, it begins with a theoretical study that mobilizes Foucauldian concepts such as device and subjectivation, as well as concepts from the field of deaf studies such as deafhood and deaftopia, articulating them with historical events that permeate international signs as identified in the bibliographic production that mentions this language. From this, three temporal phases are perceived that indicate the emergence of this device in the 19th century, its attempts at standardization throughout the 20th century, and its popularization in the first decades of the 21st century, with a focus on the Brazilian context. Finally, it is argued that the convention for an international sign language is marked by a deaftopian intention, which reinforces the constitution of a Surdus mundi, a deaf subjectivity inscribed in a cosmopolitan ideal.
