A discriminação e o preconceito linguísticos no português brasileiro e outras línguas:
sugestões e recomendações*

Neste artigo, fazemos uma distinção entre o preconceito e a discriminação
em relação a (a) línguas diferentes e seus falantes (b) diferentes variedades
não padronizadas da mesma língua e seus falantes, e argumentamos que,
embora a discriminação e o preconceito em relação a (a) tenham sido
denunciados por instituições internacionais e existam leis nacionais e
internacionais para garantir os direitos de falantes de línguas diferentes, a
mesma proteção não foi concedida a falantes de variedades não
padronizadas de uma língua. Examinamos um caso específico desse tipo de
preconceito linguístico no Brasil. Discutimos a eficácia dos esforços dos
linguistas para combater o preconceito linguístico com base no princípio da
correção de erros (Labov 1982) e, com base nos trabalhos de Cameron
(2012c) e Bourdieu (1986), sugerimos que o preconceito linguístico não
pode ser desvinculado de outros tipos de preconceito e que os linguistas
precisam ter uma compreensão muito mais profunda dos valores que a
sociedade associa às formas linguísticas. Concluímos com uma série de
sugestões e recomendações para combater mais eficazmente o preconceito
linguístico.
