Author Guidelines

Submission Conditions

In the submission process, authors must verify all the items listed below. Submissions that do not comply with the guidelines of Revista Formação will not be evaluated.

1. Whether the contribution is original and unpublished.
2. Whether the manuscript is not being evaluated for publication by another journal.
3. Whether the submission files are in Microsoft Office Word format.
4. Whether URLs for references have been provided when necessary.
5. Whether the text has between 12 (twelve) and 20 (twenty) pages for original articles and research reports, between 2 (two) and 7 (seven) pages for reviews, 1 (one) page for doctoral thesis summaries and master's dissertations, and a maximum of 2 (two) pages for dossier proposals, in A4 size, typed in Times New Roman font, size 12 (twelve), with 1.5 line spacing or single spacing for the category of thesis and dissertation summaries.
6. Whether the text follows the style standards and bibliographic requirements described in the Author Guidelines, in the Submission section.
7. Whether the manuscript’s author identification has been removed from the file and the Microsoft Office Word Properties option, ensuring the journal’s confidentiality criterion when submitted for peer review.

The standards and guidelines set by the journal for original articles, research reports, reviews of classical or contemporary works, thesis or dissertation summaries, and dossier proposals must follow the formatting rules established by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT). Specific formatting instructions according to the journal's scope are as follows:

Original Articles, Including Experience Reports

Original articles should have between 12 and 20 pages (30,000 to 60,000 characters with spaces). They must be written in 1.5 line spacing; with 3.0 cm margins at the top and left, and 2.0 cm margins at the bottom and right; A4 page size, Times New Roman font, size 12; Experience reports may also range from 12 to 20 pages (30,000 to 60,000 characters with spaces). They should be written in 1.5 line spacing; with 3.0 cm margins at the top and left, and 2.0 cm margins at the bottom and right; A4 page size, Times New Roman font, size 12; The title in Portuguese must be centered, in bold, uppercase, with single line spacing, and no more than 20 words. The English title should have the same formatting but must be italicized and without bold, placed directly below the Portuguese title; The abstract should be clear and objective, containing 100 to 150 words, including information about the topic, objectives, theoretical and methodological procedures, and results. It should include 3 to 5 keywords, followed by a period between them, written in Portuguese. Line spacing should be single, no indent, in Times New Roman font, size 11. The terms "Resumo" and "Palavras-chave" should be in bold with only the first letters capitalized; The same standard should be applied to the Abstract, the English version of the summary; Subtitles of sections in the text should have their first letter capitalized, Times New Roman font, size 12, bold, and aligned to the left with single line spacing (only for subtitles). Sections such as Introduction, Final Considerations, and References are not numbered. Other sections should follow numbering according to the subtitles of the work.

Book Reviews

Reviews should contain between 10,000 and 20,000 characters with spaces (3 to 7 pages), in 1.5 line spacing; with 3.0 cm margins at the top and left, and 2.0 cm margins at the bottom and right; in A4 size, Times New Roman font, size 12. The title in Portuguese should be centered, bold, in uppercase, with single line spacing and no more than 20 words. The English title should have the same formatting but must be italicized and without bold, placed directly below the Portuguese title. Note: Do not confuse the title of the review with the title of the book being reviewed. The author should create a title for the review. In a footnote, under the created title, in Times New Roman font, size 10, justified, provide the reference of the reviewed work following ABNT NBR 6023/2018.

For example:

Reviewed Work: LASTNAME, Firstname. Title of the Work in Italics. City: Publisher, Year of Publication, total pages, ISBN number.

Example of reference: Reviewed Work: CHAGURI, Jonathas de Paula. Antônio Carneiro Leão and Language Teaching in Brazil. Maringá: Eduem, 2020. 207 p. ISBN: 978-85-7628-778-0.

The review should contain a clear and objective summary, with 100 to 150 words, including information about the theme addressed by the work and relevant details of the book. It should include 3 to 5 keywords, followed by a period, written in Portuguese. Line spacing should be single, no indent, Times New Roman font, size 11. The terms “Resumo” and “Palavras-chave” should be in bold with only the first letters capitalized; The same formatting should apply to the Abstract, the English version of the summary; Subtitles [when applicable] should have their first letter capitalized, Times New Roman font, size 12, bold, aligned to the left, with single line spacing (only for subtitles). Sections such as Introduction, Final Considerations, and References are not numbered. Other sections should follow numbering according to the work's subtitles; At the time of submission, in the Supplemental Documents section, the author must attach a copy of the book cover in JPG or PNG format.

Thesis or Dissertation Summaries

Thesis and dissertation summaries should contain up to 4,000 characters with spaces, in single line spacing; with 3.0 cm margins at the top and left, and 2.0 cm margins at the bottom and right; A4 page size, Times New Roman font, size 11; The title in Portuguese should be centered, bold, uppercase, with single line spacing, and no more than 20 words. The English title should have the same formatting, but it should be italicized and without bold, placed directly below the Portuguese title; The body of the summary should contain between 200 to 500 words, including information about the topic, objectives, theoretical and methodological procedures, and results. It should include 3 to 5 keywords, followed by a period, written in Portuguese. Line spacing should be single, no indent, Times New Roman font, size 11. The terms “Resumo” and “Palavras-chave” should be in bold with only the first letters capitalized; For this category of manuscript, there is no need to write an Abstract (English summary);

Note: In a footnote, under the title of the summary, in Times New Roman font, size 10, justified, single line spacing, provide the reference for the study according to NBR 6023/2018 from ABNT.

For example: LASTNAME, Firstname. Title of the Thesis or Dissertation in Italics. Number of pages with the abbreviation "f." Year of defense. Dissertation or Thesis - (Master's or Doctoral Program Name), Name of the Institution. City, Year. Supervised by: Prof. Dr. Firstname Lastname.

Example of reference: SILVA, Romero Antônio de Almeida. Identity, Memory, and Belonging as Instruments of Struggle in the School Curriculum of the Quilombola Community of Trigueiros-PE. 191 f. 2020. Dissertation (Master's in Education) - University of Pernambuco, Campus Mata Norte. Nazaré da Mata, 2020. Supervised by: Prof. Dr. Adlene Silva Arantes.

At the time of submission, in the Supplemental Documents section, the author must attach a Cover Sheet of the thesis or dissertation summary with the following information:

a) Title of the thesis or dissertation; b) Author of the work; c) Name of the advisor; d) Name of the program (only those in the field of Education); e) Name of the institution spelled out, followed by its acronym in parentheses; f) Year of defense.

Thematic Dossier Proposals

Dossier proposals should be organized by up to 3 (three) PhD professors from a public or private higher education institution. Proposals should be submitted by email to the journal (revista.formacao@upe.br) with the following information:

1. In the subject field of the email, write: *Dossier Proposal to Revista Formação;
2. In the body of the email or as an attached file in Microsoft Word format, provide:

a) Thematic focus of the dossier; b) Names of the proposers; c) Full name of the proposers' institution and its acronym; updated mini-curriculum in up to 300 characters with spaces, followed by the Lattes Curriculum link; d) Dossier proposal containing theme, objectives, theoretical framework, and methodological procedure; e) The dossier proposal written by the authors should not exceed 2 (two) pages, in Times New Roman font, size 12, single line spacing.

General Guidelines

1. Texts may be written in Portuguese, Spanish, English, or French. Texts in foreign languages must include a summary in Portuguese. The author of the text submitted to the journal in one of the aforementioned foreign languages should include a file with the Portuguese translation. The Portuguese file should be submitted in the Supplemental Documents section of the online journal system without author identification. For final acceptance, both the foreign language text and the Portuguese version must include a language review statement signed (either electronically or digitally) by a specialized professional. The journal has a database of professional reviewers, and authors may contact these professionals directly for the language review of both the Portuguese and foreign language versions of the text.
2. The journal reserves the right to publish works with up to 3 (three) authors, with at least one author holding a PhD. However, for works related to book reviews and thesis or dissertation summaries, authors may hold a Master's degree.
3. If the research has received financial support from a funding agency or institution, this information must be included in a footnote in the title or in any part of the body of the text.
4. Files must be submitted in two versions: without author identification and with author identification with the names placed directly under the English title of the text. The author identification version should be submitted in the Supplemental Documents section of the journal’s system. Submissions should be made through the journal’s online submission system. Authors are asked to complete their metadata (full registration) during submission.
5. Graphs, tables, illustrations, and figures should be included in the body of the text, properly numbered and identified.
6. Notes and bibliographic references must follow the guidelines of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT).
7. Proposals submitted to Revista Formação must be revised, under penalty of not being accepted. The correction of Portuguese, English summaries, and the foreign language text (if applicable), as well as compliance with ABNT norms, are criteria considered in the evaluation.
8. Citations in the body of the text up to 3 (three) lines should follow this format: author’s surname in lowercase, year of the work, comma, and page. Example: According to Costa-Maciel (2012, p. 14), "teaching knowledge for oral education...".
9. Citations longer than 3 (three) lines in the text should follow this format: font size 10, Times New Roman, single line spacing, 4 cm left indentation, and justified alignment.
10. Use quotation marks only for citations up to 3 (three) lines in the text and to mention events or book, article, film, etc., titles.
11. Italics should be used for foreign words.
12. Footnotes should be placed at the end of each page and be explanatory in nature.
13. Documentary sources should be referenced at the end of the manuscript, before the References section.
14. All works cited in the manuscript, as well
