The rise of women’s rights and their social representation in Cláudia magazine

This article aims to investigate and understand how discourses represented women in women's magazines, based on a chronological study. Therefore, more specifically, we will analyze female representation in Claudia’s Magazine in the years 1961, 1962, 2010, 2020 and the preface to the 1961 edition, which constitute the corpus of analysis. From a theoretical point of view, the research will draw on Fairclough (2001), Gregolin (1995), Van Dijk (2008) and others. The analysis demonstrated that the discourses present on the magazine cover and preface do not significantly represent the real image of women. We can see that the image of women is presented as a socially constructed stereotype in discourses linked to gender and promoted by the men who hold the power to produce magazines and the media in general. And the discourses on the covers and in the preface of the magazines present the social image of women associated with conservative discourses.
